Spanish-Jordanian Project on Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensing and Artificial Intelligence to Study Mining Pollution

A research team from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Science has received support for a research project from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. The project aims to use hyperspectral remote sensing, reflectance spectroscopy, and artificial intelligence to identify areas affected by pollution resulting from mining activities in Spain and Jordan.
The research team from the University of León, Dr. Eduardo Mendeliza and Dr. Ferrer Montserrat, will visit Jordan in December to conduct fieldwork. The project also involves two Spanish universities—University of León and Miguel Hernández University of Elche—as well as the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Notably, this collaboration extends previous partnerships between the University of León and the University of Twente.
The participating team from Yarmouk University includes Prof. Moheeb Awawdeh (project coordinator in Jordan), Prof. Habis Ghraifat, and Applied Geoinformatics master’s student Osama Qawasmeh. Through this project, the student will join the PhD program at the University of León specializing in Environmental Science and Technology.
