When the Earth Speaks… Yarmouk Responds with Action: A Lasting Impact Planted on Earth Day (April)

In a scene that blended meaning with action, and vision with impact, the Faculty of Science at Yarmouk University celebrated Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, through the initiative “Yarmouk Goes Green by Our Hands”. The initiative reflected an integrated environmental vision translated into tangible practices within the university campus.

The event was held in a warm and engaging atmosphere in the presence of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Institutional Excellence, Professor Amjad  Al-Nasser, alongside deans and members of the academic and administrative staff. The broad participation reflected a sense of satisfaction and genuine engagement, confirming that the initiative was more than a well-organized event; it carried a meaningful message and spirit.

In his remarks, Prof. Al-Nasser emphasized Yarmouk University’s commitment to transforming national and royal directives regarding environmental protection and sustainability into practical initiatives emerging from the university environment itself. He stressed that expanding green spaces and promoting a culture of planting are essential pillars of sustainability and an extension of Earth Day’s global mission of awareness and action.

For his part, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Muheeb Awawdeh, described Earth Day as a moment of awareness and reflection on humanity’s relationship with the planet, noting that the faculty embodies this concept through its academic programs and scientific identity. He also praised the outstanding achievements of the faculty’s students in regional and international competitions, reflecting their distinguished academic capabilities.

In the same context, Dr. Tareq Al-Shboul, Head of the Department of Basic Scientific Courses and Chair of the Organizing Committee, explained that the initiative was built around the idea that true impact begins with awareness, and that every detail was carefully planned to leave a lasting impression beyond the event itself.

The organizing committee demonstrated a remarkable model of institutional teamwork, reflecting precision, professionalism, and a genuine team spirit that contributed to presenting the initiative in a cohesive and distinguished manner.

The outdoor planting activities represented a practical translation of the initiative’s goals, contributing to enhancing the green spaces surrounding the faculty building and reinforcing the visible impact of collective effort.

The interactive planting activity formed the heart and spirit of the initiative, transforming into a lively human-centered experience where participants engaged in symbolic planting and wrote messages on the “Initiative Tree.” The activity also featured the idea of “mystery seeds planting,” which added a distinctive interactive dimension and reinforced the idea that real impact begins with a small seed whose results may not be immediately visible. Ms. Ghouson Za’iter was responsible for preparing the materials for this section according to the design approved by the organizing committee, contributing to presenting it in harmony with the spirit of the initiative.
The event also featured a hydroponics corner, where Ms. Alaa Al-Qudah contributed to highlighting the importance of hydroponic agriculture as a modern and sustainable agricultural practice that supports environmental awareness and resource conservation.

In a symbolic moment, the Vice President planted an oak tree (Quercus calliprinos), representing continuity, rootedness, and the enduring spirit of the initiative.

The event concluded with honoring members of the organizing committee, as well as students who won regional and international scientific competitions and their supervisors, in recognition of their excellence and contributions.

These efforts were further supported through the cooperation of the Irbid Directorate of Agriculture, the Department of General Services, and contributors from within and outside the faculty, reflecting a spirit of partnership and belonging.

The closing group photo was not merely documentation of a successful event, but rather a declaration that what had been planted that day extends beyond time and place.

“Yarmouk Goes Green by Our Hands”…
An impact planted with awareness… to endure.
