About the Department

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences was established in 1981 in response to the increasing demand for geologists and the growing interest in environmental sciences. Since then, the department has been committed to providing distinguished programs and high-quality educational and research opportunities in geological and environmental sciences. As a result, the department's graduates have become leaders in academia and industry sectors locally, regionally, and internationally. The department facilitates collaborative research and teaching in geological sciences and geoinformatics, physics and environmental chemistry, and archaeological geology.

The department offers various Bachelor's and Master's programs, including:

The Bachelor of Science in Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Bachelor of Science in Applied Geology. The latter aims to graduate competent geologists capable of conducting various geological studies and surveys, exploring, and managing diverse natural resources. This is achieved by equipping them with a broad range of scientific and practical skills and abilities required by the job market.

The department also offers students from other disciplines the opportunity to combine their specialized expertise with geology and environmental sciences by offering a minor in geology and another in environmental sciences. The department emphasizes bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application by offering a field geology course during the summer semester and ensuring that most courses include a practical component, in addition to applied projects and research.

The department currently offers three graduate programs leading to a Master's degree in either thesis or comprehensive track:

Master of Science in Earth Sciences.

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences, in partnership with various scientific departments in the Faculty of Science.

Master of Science in Applied Geoinformatics, in partnership with the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts.

The department currently employs 19 faculty members, including 3 lecturers and 4 teaching assistants, in addition to 4 technicians.

The department's faculty members, graduates of prestigious universities worldwide, have produced numerous publications in peer-reviewed and indexed international scientific journals. In addition to providing opportunities for advanced collaborative research, the department offers scientific consultations and technical services in related fields and has established a framework for joint collaborations with universities and organizations at both the national and international levels. The department is equipped with laboratories and resources for teaching and research, enabling students to conduct advanced research in a wide range of subjects, including geoinformatics, sedimentology, petroleum, surface geological processes, hydrology, geophysics, geochemistry, paleoclimatology, structural geology, engineering geology, environmental monitoring and observation, quality assessment, and water resource management.

Vision

To be a leader in the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences, focusing on education and scientific research and providing facilities for industrial, applied, and community research services.

Mission

To provide comprehensive field and laboratory training that is academically integrated (encompassing theoretical and practical approaches, and applied sciences, particularly in policy development, environmental management, and protection) in the fields of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
