About Physics Department

Overview

The Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science, Yarmouk University, is a cornerstone of higher education, scientific research, and community service. Established in the academic year 1976/1977 for undergraduate studies, the department expanded its academic horizons by launching a Master’s program in Physics in 1982/1983, building a legacy of academic excellence and professional qualification.
In response to global scientific advancements, the department introduced a Bachelor’s program in Medical and Biological Physics in 2004/2005, followed by a Master’s program in Medical Physics in 2020. These additions aim to provide specialized expertise that meets the demands of academic institutions, healthcare sectors, and the evolving labor market.

Human Resources & Academic Staff
The department is supported by a highly qualified team committed to educational and research excellence:
  • 27 Faculty members (PhD holders).

  • 10 Lecturers and Teaching Assistants.

  • 6 Technical and Administrative staff.

Research & Educational Facilities
The department provides an integrated learning environment equipped with specialized laboratories that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Key research facilities include:
  • Mössbauer Spectroscopy Laboratory

  • Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Laboratory

  • Alpha Spectroscopy Laboratory

  • Computational Physics Laboratory

  • Nanomedical Physics Laboratory

Strategic Partnerships
To enhance practical training and professional development, the department has established several key partnerships, including:
  • King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) and the Royal Medical Services, focusing on hands-on clinical training in medical physics.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding with the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) to foster scientific and professional cooperation.

Quality & Accreditation
Reflecting its commitment to international standards, the department achieved a milestone in 2025 by receiving the ABET Accreditation. This certification ensures that the department’s programs and learning outcomes align with global benchmarks and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

To achieve leadership and excellence in Physics and Medical Physics education, scientific research, and community service at both local and regional levels.

Mission
To prepare graduates who are scientifically and professionally qualified in Physics and Medical Physics, equipped with the knowledge and technical skills necessary to contribute to scientific research, serve the community, and compete in the labor market within an academic environment that stimulates creativity, excellence, and professional ethics.
