Scientific Contribution by Al-Rawabdeh at MedGU-25 / University of Athens

Dr. Abdullah Mustafa Al-Rawabdeh, faculty member in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences – Faculty of Science, Yarmouk University, participated in the international scientific conference Mediterranean Geosciences Union (MedGU-25), held at the University of Athens, Greece, from November 10 to 12, 2025.

Dr. Al-Rawabdeh presented a research paper entitled: “Landslide Susceptibility Mapping Using Big Data and Ensemble-Based Machine Learning Models Along the Amman–Jerash–Irbid Highway Area, Jordan.”

This study represented an advanced scientific contribution in employing big data and ensemble machine learning models to analyze landslide hazards along one of Jordan’s most vital transportation routes, the Amman–Jerash–Irbid highway. The research enabled the identification of the most vulnerable areas and proposed engineering and geomorphological solutions to mitigate risks.

Based on the scientific findings, the researcher recommended integrating remote sensing data with advanced predictive models to enhance the accuracy of geological hazard maps, and developing an early warning system for landslides based on rainfall data and topographic changes. He also emphasized the importance of improving the infrastructure of the Amman–Jerash–Irbid highway by strengthening drainage systems and reinforcing slopes at critical points.

The study further highlighted the significance of employing artificial intelligence techniques in managing landslide risks within governmental institutions, and of fostering regional research collaboration among universities and scientific centers to strengthen Jordan’s capacity to confront geological hazards and improve the sustainability of vital transport networks.

In addition, Dr. Al-Rawabdeh contributed to managing the scientific sessions of the conference by chairing two specialized sessions. On the sidelines of the event, discussions were held regarding the possibility of Yarmouk University hosting the next MedGU conference. The organizing committee welcomed the proposal, and it was agreed to arrange an official visit by the committee’s chair to the university at the end of December to discuss hosting arrangements.
