Students of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Yarmouk University Visit the Jordan Seismological Observatory

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Yarmouk University organized a scientific visit to the Jordan Seismological Observatory, affiliated with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote applied learning and provide students with direct exposure to practical applications in seismic monitoring and Earth sciences.

The visit included undergraduate students majoring in Applied Geology, as well as master’s students specializing in Applied Geoinformatics, under the supervision of Dr. Rashed Jaradat and Dr. Abdullah Al-Rawabdah.

The delegation was welcomed by Engineer Ghassan Sweidan, Geophysicist Anas Al-Maaytah, and Geologist Murad Hmeimat, who delivered a comprehensive scientific presentation highlighting the establishment and historical and technical development of the Jordan Seismological Observatory. The presentation also covered a detailed explanation of the two national seismic monitoring networks (the strong-motion and weak-motion networks) and their role in monitoring seismic activity within the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and beyond.

During the visit, students were introduced to methods of seismic data analysis and the distinctions between local, regional, and tele seismic earthquake recordings, in addition to reviewing blast records and their distinctive characteristics. The visit also included an overview of the latest equipment and technologies used in seismic monitoring and data processing.

The delegation was accompanied from Yarmouk University by Mr. Atef Al-Rifai from the Services Department.

The supervising faculty members commended the ongoing collaboration between Yarmouk University and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as the leading role played by the staff of the Jordan Seismological Observatory in supporting scientific research and serving the community.

It is worth noting that Yarmouk University hosts a strong-motion seismic monitoring station within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, which contributes to enhancing opportunities for practical training, scientific research, and academic collaboration for the department’s students.
