Under the supervision of the course instructor, Professor Dr. Nabil Saif Al-Deen, students of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences / Applied Geology Program at the Faculty of Science, Yarmouk University, conducted several field trips as part of the Field Techniques course (AG 342). These expeditions primarily aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and direct practical application.
The trips commenced by emphasizing the importance of field preparation, including the use of safety equipment, specialized attire, and sensory site assessment. The field activities focused on training students in the following areas:
- Utilizing Topographic Maps and pinpointing locations using regional landmarks and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
- Collecting geological data, starting with describing rock and mineral compositions and identifying rock types using Diluted Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), hand lenses, measuring tapes, and geological hammers.
- Providing practical training on collecting various samples for chemical analysis, physical property studies, or the preparation of microscopic thin sections.
- Conducting structural measurements of geological formations in the Wadi Al-Ghafr area, where students practiced taking readings for various joints and strata dips.
- Training students on projecting geological data onto topographic maps, drawing vertical stratigraphic columns, and tracing rock outcrops to construct a comprehensive geological map.
