Under the generous patronage of His Excellency the President of Yarmouk University, Professor Dr. Islam Massad, the Faculty of Science organized an extensive awareness lecture on cybercrimes, delivered by Lieutenant Saleem Malkawi from the Cybercrime Unit of the Public Security Directorate. This event was held as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to enhance security awareness and instill a culture of legal responsibility among its students.

This activity was part of a series of events conducted by the university in cooperation with the relevant security authorities, aiming to raise students’ awareness of the risks of the digital space and equip them with tools for digital protection, in light of the rapid technological developments and increasing cyber threats witnessed globally.

During the lecture, Lieutenant Malkawi reviewed the fundamental concepts of cybercrime, explaining its various forms such as account hacking, data theft, cyber extortion, identity theft, rumor spreading, and crimes related to information trafficking and illegal content. He also focused on the negative impacts of these crimes, whether legal, psychological, or social.

Lieutenant Malkawi clarified that cybercrime is no longer confined to the personal sphere but now affects entire institutions and communities. He pointed out that the advancement of technology is paralleled by evolving methods of crime, which necessitates constant vigilance and regular updates in prevention and awareness strategies.

He presented real-life examples during the lecture, showcasing cases where individuals were subjected to extortion or online fraud due to sharing private information or interacting carelessly with strangers online. He emphasized that such incidents are not rare, but occur daily, particularly targeting the youth demographic.

Lieutenant Malkawi stressed the importance of cultivating a digital culture based on awareness and responsibility. He warned against the careless sharing of private images and information on social media, or engaging with suspicious links and websites. He also urged students to always verify the sources of news and emails and to not fall for misleading advertisements or fake prize offers.

The lecture witnessed significant interaction from students, culminating in an open discussion where Lieutenant Malkawi answered attendees' questions and explained the procedures to follow in cases of cyber threats or extortion. He emphasized the importance of promptly contacting the Cybercrime Unit, which operates around the clock to receive reports and provide the necessary technical and legal support.

For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Dr. Amjad D. Al-Naser, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Public Security Directorate, represented by the Cybercrime Unit, for its fruitful cooperation with the university. He affirmed the faculty’s commitment to organizing more awareness lectures and workshops that address contemporary challenges and contribute to building a safe and informed university environment.

It is worth mentioning that Yarmouk University continuously strives to strengthen its partnerships with national and security institutions, as part of its vision to prepare a generation that is legally and technologically aware and equipped to deal efficiently with the developments and risks of the digital age.
