International Scientific Symposium

As part of the activities of the Faculty of Science, Professor Dr. Khaldoun Al-Qudah delivered a public seminar on the water situation in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The lecture featured an informative presentation on the current state of water resources in the Kingdom and the major challenges facing the water sector, including the concepts of water poverty and water harvesting in Jordan. Dr. Al-Qudah also addressed key issues such as the limited availability of water resources, the declining per capita share of water—among the lowest globally—and the heavy reliance on rainfall. He noted that last year’s rainy season witnessed low precipitation levels, which further exacerbated the water crisis in the country.

He also addressed the key proposed solutions to tackle these challenges, most notably the project for treating and desalinating water from the Gulf of Aqaba, which was agreed upon through accords signed in Jordan in 2025. Additional solutions included strengthening water harvesting initiatives, reusing treated water in agriculture and industry, and implementing policies to rationalize water consumption.

It is worth noting that the lecture was held under the patronage of the President of the Middle Technical University in Baghdad, Professor Dr. Mufid Saadi Abdul Ghafour. The seminar was broadcast via the FreeConferenceCall (FCC) platform and was attended by a group of faculty members from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Science at Yarmouk University, fostering a fruitful exchange of ideas and expertise among the participants.

In this context, Professor Dr. Muheeb Awawdeh, Dean of the Faculty of Science, expressed his support and encouragement for such seminars, emphasizing their role in strengthening regional educational and research collaboration among Arab peers. He also highlighted their potential to pave the way for future partnerships between the two universities in the fields of scientific research and sustainable development.
