The Vice President of Yarmouk University, Dr. Amjad Dheifallah Al-Nasser, sponsored the celebration of World Statistics Day, organized by the Faculty of Science, and attended by the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Moheeb Awawdeh, and the Head of the Department of Statistics, Dr. Ayman Baklezy. In his opening speech, Dr. Al-Nasser explained the difference between statistics and mathematics, noting that mathematics is the umbrella of all sciences, while statistics is the umbrella of scientific research and studies

He added that statistics is a science that plays a role in numerous applications such as physics, social and human sciences, as well as politics and business. He pointed out that statistics serves researchers across all scientific fields and decision-makers in various practical domains. There is hardly any field of scientific research that statistics has not touched or contributed to effectively. Al-Nasser noted that this year’s celebration theme, 'High-quality statistics and data for everyone', aims to emphasize the importance of data in driving change and supporting sound decision-making to achieve sustainable development. It also seeks to raise awareness about the value of accurate and reliable data in shaping public policies

For his part, Dr. Awawdeh noted that celebrating this day is a global occasion to highlight the pivotal role of statistical sciences in modern life. He emphasized that statistics is not merely numbers and tables, but rather the language of data that helps us understand the surrounding world, make sound decisions, and develop enlightened future plans.
Dr. Awawdeh expressed the Faculty’s pride in the Department of Statistics for its research and scientific contributions, and for supplying the labor market and various institutions with qualified professionals capable of addressing the data-driven challenges of our time. He pointed out that statistics is an indispensable tool for achieving sustainable development and building the knowledge society that the world aspires to.
Dr. Baklezy explained that the celebration of the third World Statistics Day—commemorated globally on October 20 every five years—was initiated in response to a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly, in recognition of the importance of reliable statistics and indicators in decision-making and tracking progress in countries, especially regarding the Sustainable Development Goals. He added that the Faculty of Science takes pride in hosting this vital discipline, emphasizing the need to develop it further, promote scientific research within it, and graduate qualified professionals capable of serving society and keeping pace with global advancements

On the sidelines of the celebration, a number of faculty members and students from the college were honored for their efforts and various achievements
